Edward S Johnston

In my Experiential Flow series, I engage in a generative, creative process in which I craft digital
compositions from collected artifacts of my experiences. I intentionally go on walks, travel through space,
and explore my surroundings seeking out unique perceptual shapes from the enclosed edges of visual
phenomena. I video-record and call these shapes Experiential Primers. Sometimes, it is the perceived
edges of clouds, the unique shapes created from the visual contrast of lights and shadows, or even the
overlapping of tree branches. Simultaneously, I am recording the timestamp and duration between the
collection of these shapes. With all of that information and other collected data in the video footage, I use
time to generate proportional distance between stacked picture planes in digital simulated space. With the
enclosed shapes aligned with time, I use a generative lofting method to create novel 3D forms, similar to
placing planks over the planar sections of boat ribs.
This piece is created from video footage of a short walk that I took in the Adirondack Mountains, and I
have incorporated music into this series to guide the digital journey.
The Experiential Flow series is realized through the recorded explorations of one’s surroundings and the
subsequent discovery of novel forms through generative processes using the data embedded and selected from the recordings.
