1. Florautomata: Lily Style and Stamen
2. Florautomata: Campanula Style and Stamen
The Generative Florautomata series links visualizations of second-order two-dimensional cellular
automata with multiscale images of plant materials (using macrophotography, scanning electron
microscopy, and digital image processing). Transformed into montages, the juxtapositions
celebrate the intrinsic beauty of these evolved materials, along with our species’ ability to
comprehend the transmission of genetic information by plants (e.g., pollen, ovaries), and to mimic
and extend these natural structures via computation and visualization.
3. Hibiscus and Butterfly Weed, Macro and Micro: Scanning Electron microscope images of
dissected reproductive structures from Butterfly Weed and Hibiscus flowers are juxtaposed with
macro photography of the same species. They have been colorized with samples of hues pulled
from the macro photographs.
4.Camino: The Road to Santiago: I hiked 200 miles of the Camino Santiago de Compostela and
documented the landscape and villages photographically. From these I produced Camino art quilts
based upon the theme of pilgrimage to the Cathedral of St. James, the third oldest
continuous Christian pilgrimage site, second to Rome and Jerusalem."
